THOMASVILLE — Thomas County government’s declared state of emergency opens doors for resources during the coronavirus pandemic gripping the community.

The status activates the county emergency operations plan.

Chris Jones, county emergency management director, said the emergency 

declaration allows county government to make purchases and enter contracts that usually require a lengthy process.

“It opens the door for us to request resources,” Jones said.

For example, if needed, the Georgia National Guard could be enlisted to assist with traffic at coronavirus testing sites, he said.

Jones said that when the pandemic has passed, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be asked to reimburse the county for funding spent on coronavirus-related action.

Emergency declarations were ordered twice earlier this year during weather events, but the county did not have to request outside resources.

“It’s more of a planning tool to help us take care of whatever comes up,” Jones said.
