Cairo, Grady County prepare to meet — with new standards

CAIRO — Two Grady County public meetings next week are bucking a recent trend of cancellations and postponements amid coronavirus fears and will take place as scheduled.
Grady County Administrator Buddy Johnson said next Tuesday’s called meeting of the Board of Commissioners will be “strictly business.”
“We don’t want to be in there any longer than we have to be,” Johnson said.
Tuesday morning’s agenda will cover material the commissioners were originally going to tackle March 17 before that meeting was scratched, but will not include any scheduled presentations. Aside from an executive session, the abridged agenda will only cover consent items and formal actions. Residents will be able to attend the meeting, though there will be no public comment period.
The White House has recommended that gatherings of more than 10 people be canceled or postponed to limit the spread of the coronavirus, but with state sunshine laws still in effect, there’s no way for the county to enforce a limit to the number of attendees to a public meeting. County clerk John White said if more than 10 people attend the meeting, they would all have to be let inside.
To counter this, Johnson said the county will provide any resident a recording of the meeting free of charge.
The commission meeting will take place at 9 a.m. at the Grady County courthouse.
Also meeting next week will be the Cairo City Council, which has a regularly scheduled meeting Monday night. Only two items of new business are on the council’s limited agenda: one to call a special election for the office of mayor to be held May 19, and another to set the qualifying fees and a qualification period for that election.
“It should be a very short meeting,” said City Manager Chris Addleton.
City officials will limit the meeting to “essential personnel” — the council, Addleton, city clerk Dana Barfield and members of the press.
Addleton said seating arrangements at the meeting may be kept six feet apart if necessary.
The city council meeting will take place at 6 p.m.
