THOMASVILLE — Thomasville police are following every lead in the shooting death of a man whose body was found on a city street two weeks ago.
The body of 19-year-old Chance Kelley was discovered about 5 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 9, lying near the intersection of Madison Alley and Merrill Street.
The victim, a Marine stationed in South Carolina, was in Thomasville to attend the funeral of his great-grandmother.
Kelley was shot multiple times. The autopsy will determine how many times Kelley was shot, said Lt. Toby Knifer, Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division commander.
Several hours after the body was found, Kelley’s 2014 Honda Civic was located in the 100 block of Georgia Avenue.
“We’re getting leads coming in almost every day,” Knifer said. “There’s a lot of speculation and rumor out there we’re having to follow up on.”
Officers want people to provide information about the death, “but not every lead is related to the investigation,” the commander said.
“We are making progress,” Knifer said. “We want to be sure we get it right.”
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 911. Callers’ identities will remain confidential.
