King Day celebration planned
The M.L.K. Collaborative has announced their plans for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration in Cairo which will be held on Monday, January 20. The theme for this year’s event is, “Teamwork Make the Dream Work.” Activities will include a parade through downtown Cairo beginning at 11 a.m. featuring Cairo native Javar McGhee. The parade will end at Holder Park where McGhee will give the keynote speech followed by entertainment, a free lunch and a fun afternoon of fellowship for all. Everyone is invited to attend an honor Dr. King’s legacy.
Chamber awards banquet is January 25
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Awards Banquet at the Grady Cultural Center on January 25. The cocktail hour and registration will begin at 5 p.m. with the annual banquet starting at 6 featuring a meal catered by the Cairo High School Culinary Arts Program. Entertainment for the event will be provided by the Billy Rigsby Band. Tickets for the banquet can be purchased at the chamber.
Event to raise money for paddle trail
The Ochlocknee River Water Trail and Golden Triangle RC&D members invite everyone to attend the upcoming FUNdraiser, “Escape from Zombie Park” to be held on Thursday, January 16 at 6 p.m. at the Cairo Woman’s Club. The evening will feature an ‘escape room’ where all who attend will participate and attempt to master the maze and escape. There will also be a dinner, open bar and silent auction with all proceeds benefitting the development of a city walking trail, a paddle trail on Tired Creek Lake and safety signage along the Ochlocknee River. Tickets are currently on sale at First National Bank on North Broad Street.
St. Stephens M.B. Church to observe anniversary
The Mission Ministry of the St. Stephens M.B. Church is observing its annual Mission Anniversary to be held on Saturday, January 25 starting at 5 p.m. Sister Catherine Addison, president of the Mission Ministry, the Rev. Harry Mitchell Jr., pastor and the entire congregation invites all to attend.
New hours for library used book store
The Roddenbery Memorial Library’s Used Book Story has new hours and will now be only be open every third Tuesday and every fourth Saturday of the month. The book store is located in the Grady Room behind the main library.
Registration for spring sports under way
The Grady County Recreation Department is currently holding registration for spring sports. You can register through February 14 for youth baseball, girls fastpitch softball and co-ed tee ball. For age restrictions and age control dates, contact the rec department. Register by stopping by the recreation department on North Broad Street weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Learn to Sew in 2020
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to sew, the Roddenbery Memorial Library is offering a sewing class beginning this month. “Sewing with Myrna” is offered every second Saturday at 11 a.m. and every Tuesday at 6 .p.m. No previous sewing experience is needed to attend the classes.
Al-Anon chapter meets Thursdays
Does someone close to you have a drinking or drug problem? Al-Anon Family Groups have one focus: to help friends and families of alcoholics. The local group meets on Thursdays at 9 a.m. at the AA clubhouse, 3351 Hwy. 84, Cairo, GA 38828. For more information call Linda at (229) 221-5469.
