‘Adam, where art thou?’

After Adam and Eve had sinned, God called out to Adam, “Where art thou?” Now God knew perfectly well where Adam was. He was asking him where he was spiritually. The first man and woman had sinned, and they were hiding from God. This is never possible. God always knows everything. Adam and Eve were aware of their sins, as people today are. The first couple offered God excuses. Adam blamed Eve, while Eve blamed the serpent.

The Bible makes clear that God holds each individual fully and personally accountable for his behavior. Sin was and still is open rebellion against the Lord God Almighty. It always leads to spiritual death. However, God had always known that man would sin, so He provided an escape, the death of His own Son, Jesus the Messiah. Jesus died a tortured, terrible death on the cross for your sins and for mine. He was buried and rose from the dead on the third day. He then ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the heavenly Father.

By believing this gospel and trusting your soul to Christ, all your sins are washed away by His blood, the “blood of the Lamb.” So you will one day stand before God blameless with the righteousness Christ has imputed to you. You will have to answer for what you did on earth, but you will surely go on to heaven.

However, if you die not believing this gospel, if you die without Christ as your Savior, you will stand before the judgment seat of Christ condemned. You will then be consigned to the Lake of Fire, reserved for Satan and his minions, to pay for all your sins yourself. The worst part of all is that you will pay forever, for all eternity. This fate is so horrible to contemplate that most people refuse to believe it. But as the preacher warns, “Not believing in something does not make it go away.” Hell is a real place of torture, and it awaits all unbelievers.

God is today still calling on man and still asking, “Where art thou?” He is trying to remind man to be saved. Peter told us that God is unwilling that any should perish or be lost (2 Pet. 3:9). Sadly, most people today are lost and will perish out of disbelief in the gospel. And that fact haunts and torments all true believers, especially ministers who love others as Christ commanded. And that is why we plead with people, preach, and even write columns like this one. We want you to share in the glory of heaven that we anticipate. We want you to have the hope that is in Christ the Savior. We want to see you in heaven one day soon.

Satan has most people deceived today in thinking that Christianity is a bunch of myths. As long as this is true, he knows he has them. May God intervene. Be saved today.
