THOMASVILLE — The last 2019 Thomasville shooting took place on the last day of the year.
Of the city’s 10 shootings last year, two resulted in a homicide, according to Thomasville Police Department numbers.
A 37-year-old man shot in the back Tuesday afternoon in the 300 block of West Webster Street is in stable condition after undergoing surgery at Archbold Memorial Hospital.
The shooting victim went to a nearby residence and asked a woman to take him to the hospital. Archbold reported the shooting to police.
“We have several leads in the investigation. Those leads are being followed up on,” said Lt. Toby Knifer, TPD Criminal Investigations Division commander.
No one witnessed the shooting, Knifer said, adding that the caliber of the single projectile that struck the man has not been determined.
In 2018, TPD investigated eight shootings. Two resulted in homicides.
Chief Troy Rich said all 2018 shooting cases were cleared by arrests.
With the exception of the Tuesday shooting, all 2019 shootings have been cleared by arrests, Rich said.
The chief pointed out that not all shootings involved projectiles striking people. Some struck buildings or vehicles, he said.
“All of these incidents are isolated from each other and are a direct result of either a domestic or a retaliation from an ongoing dispute,” Rich said. “Although our police officers do a great job in making our community safe, these type of crimes are very difficult to prevent since they are so unpredictable. The use of a firearm to resolve these issues can have a lasting impact on all parties involved and severe consequences for those who chose this option.”
