Don’t become a statistic on the holiday road

The bulk of holiday traffic is now in the rear-view mirror. But with the weekend and New Year’s Eve still ahead, the roads are still busy — and dangerous.

AAA estimated this holiday season to be the busiest of all-time, with more than 115 million people on the roads from December 21 to January 1. That’s an increase of almost 4 percent from last year.

During the 2018 Christmas holiday travel period, the Georgia State Patrol recorded 700 accidents which led to 14 fatalities. Across the state, they arrested 285 people for those driving impaired. For the New Year’s holiday travel period, there were 368 arrests for DUI

State Patrol troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance officers caution drivers to stay focused and avoid becoming a distracted driver. And above all, make sure you have a designated sober driver ready if alcohol consumption is part of your holiday plans. Authorities urge making the decision to have a designated driver, taxi, ride share or relative or friend ready to help you get home safely before getting into the holiday festivities.

“This is a festive time of the year!” said Col. Mark McDonough, state Department of Public Safety commissioner. “We want everyone to drive sober, stay focused, obey the laws and enjoy this holiday season with family and friends.”

We think the commissioner’s advice is well worth heeding. It’s a good idea to be safe and be alert any time you’re on the road, especially now.
