CAIRO — Officials from Leon County visited Tired Creek Lake on Wednesday morning.

Tired Creek Lake consultant Will Butler led Leon County Commission chairman Bryan Desloge, Leon County Division of Tourism CDME director Kerri Post, Visit Tallahassee senior marketing director Katie Kole and others on a tour of the lake and the surrounding area.

Desloge, whose district directly borders Grady County to the south, also inspected the Tired Creek Lake dam.

Grady County Administrator Buddy Johnson said Post and Kole had not seen the lake prior to Wednesday morning.

Visit Tallahassee and the Leon County Division of Tourism have adopted a regional tourism strategy which creates the opportunity for a mutually beneficial relationship at little to no cost, Johnson said. Officials in Florida’s capital county can tout the lake as a recreational asset both for out of town visitors and residents.

Up for grabs for Grady County is the attention of the more than 300,000 people living in Tallahassee.

“Some of those people like to fish,” Johnson said. “Maybe they don’t know they can come here.”

Johnson figures that a single visitor who comes to fish at the lake would spend at least $10 that the county didn’t have before. Plus, the county administrator said, visitors are likely to stop and eat somewhere while they’re in town.

“It’s bringing a little tourism for us and it’s getting some recognition out there,” Johnson said. “It’s a huge benefit.”

Down the road, Johnson said Leon County could possibly assist in developing other activities that could be implemented at the lake, such as kayaking.

No quorum was necessitated by the gathering.

The lake was open for the public to witness the tour, though no residents were present.
