Cairo council approves new alcohol ordinance

CAIRO — With a unanimous vote, the sale of alcohol on Sundays in Cairo is now fair game.
City council member Jerry Cox wasted little time Monday evening in motioning to formally adopt an ordinance that will allow Sunday sales of alcohol both by the drink and by package.
Both types of sales will be allowed between the hours of 11 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.
The changes are set to take place immediately. Council members had asked that the ordinance include language that would bypass the typical 30-day waiting period.
Voters had approved two resolutions concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages in a ballot initiative last month. The resolutions empowered the council to amend the city’s code of ordinances, and council members moved quickly to do just that.
A first reading of the proposed ordinance took place last month.
Council members had previously discussed holding a referendum coinciding with the November general election to address Sunday sales based on interest from citizens and local businesses. A delegation from Tired Creek Golf Course appeared before the council earlier this year to directly request that such a referendum be held.
