The Jack Hadley Black History Museum continues to make strides to preserve the historic Imperial Hotel, located at 704 West Jackson St.
Thomasville Landmarks, in recognition of the museum’s preservation efforts, presented James “Jack” Hadley, founder and president of the Jack Hadley Black History Museum, with a plaque in recognition of the museum’s and its partners’, including Olson Architects, efforts to maintain the historic integrity of the building. Thomasville Landmarks is a private, nonprofit historic preservation advocacy organization founded in 1966. Landmarks protects the historic character of the community for the enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations.
The Landmarks plaque program began in 1972 and commemorates significant properties that contribute to the unique historic fabric of Thomas County. The program is intended to educate residents about significant places, foster the ability to make connections between existing resources and the past, encourage the preservation of places that illustrate the community’s history, and enhance cultural tourism. Obtaining a plaque is an honor for the museum because of Hadley’s and his board’s efforts to preserve the historic structure.
The plaque was presented by Executive Director of Thomasville Landmarks Mary Lang to Hadley on Monday, October 21. It will be affixed directly onto the front of the building.
Currently, the Georgia Center for Non-profits is conducting research to develop a business plan to determine the best use of the building. An announcement regarding this is anticipated at the first of the year, if not sooner. Also, fundraising efforts have been ongoing for the building’s preservation. So far, the museum has raised over $192,000 for the hotel’s preservation. Most of the donated funds are from partners the Williams Family Foundation, Thomasville Landmarks and two anonymous donors.
This Saturday, October 26, is the Second Annual Gala and Silent Auction, a benefit for the hotel, which will be held at Receptions for You at 1200 West Jackson St. Tickets for the “black tie” event are $50. This year’s entertainment is Mr. “Jim” Hadley and the Albany Freedom Singers. Also, four individuals will be honored for their enduring support of the museum. They are: Marta Turner, formerly the vice president for communications and corporate responsibility at Flowers Foods; Col. Nathan Thomas; Lonnie Vicks and Mr. “Jim” Hadley.
