A third grade teaching team at Cross Creek Elementary recently revived ancient Greece for their students.
“It is not your ordinary history lesson,” teacher Lynnette Fykes said. “It’s engaging and fun for students during this third-grade unit of study.”
Fykes, Morgan Taylor, Jen Mobley, and Marnee Stone planned many activities to teach the students how ancient Greece formed the foundation of much of Western culture today. In addition to dressing up in various Greek costumes, students rotated through different sessions to learn more about the government and other areas of the ancient Greek culture.
Students built a catapult, made clay medallions, constructed Hoplite shields, learned how to write their names in the Greek alphabet, and held a mini-Olympics. A grand feast was the culmination activity.
