COLUMBUS —  The Cairo Syrupmakers found a number of different ways to score Friday night against the Columbus Blue Devils.

Cairo recorded a safety, a field goal, three touchdowns on offense and two on special teams for a dominating 39-0 victory over Columbus.

The win sets up a showdown next Friday back in Columbus between the Syrupmakers, 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 1-AAAA, and Carver-Columbus, which routed Northside-Columbus 52-0 Friday night.

Matthew Peters threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to spark Cairo’s offense. He had a 53-yard scoring run for the Syrupmakers’ first score and hit Marquil Lovejoy for 47 yards and a 14-0 first quarter lead.

Noah Jones missed a long field goal but when Columbus missed a long field goal of its own, the Syrupmakers turned it into points. Tequan Lattimore scooped up the errant kick and raced to the other end zone for a touchdown.
