CAIRO — The Zebulon Theater will be closed for the next several weeks as the historic structure undergoes a complete makeover.

Renovation efforts will move inside Monday as crews begin removing ceiling tiles and inserting insulation, which is expected to take between seven to 10 days.

Once that’s completed, the interior of the theater will receive a new coat of paint. The auditorium will be repainted around the screen and walls and floors will be cleaned, stripped and buffed. Carpet runners inside the theater will be cleaned as well.

Theater restrooms will also receive new faucets.

“It will be completely redone from front to back, side to side,” said Robert Dykes, theater executive director.

Work crews already completed restorations to the theater’s foam and acrylic roof Thursday morning.

“There were some cracks in the foam from where the sun had beaten down over the past 10 years,” Dykes said.

Restoration efforts began on the roof on Tuesday, and the theater had its last showing prior to closing the following day.

There is no firm date for when the theater will reopen, but Dykes said he’s aiming for Oct. 11, when the Zebulon is slated to show “The Addams Family.”

Dykes could not provide an estimate for how much the renovations cost.

Efforts to raise funds to renovate the theater, which originally opened in 1936, have taken place over the past two years.

As part of those efforts, Dykes created the Partners of the Zeb annual membership program. Funds from the membership program go directly toward restoration projects for the theater. The program features multiple tiers which come with different membership perks, and fees are paid once per year.

The Zebulon also raises money for restorations through annual auctions, the next of which will take place Oct. 26 at the theater.

“That works great for us because we’ll be able to show the patrons where their money is going,” Dykes said.
