CAIRO — Grady County commissioners voted unanimously to extend County Administrator Buddy Johnson’s contract to the end of the year.

The extension places Johnson on the same January to December contract cycle as other county employees.

Commissioner Keith Moye’s motion to extend Johnson’s contract to Dec. 31 was approved unanimously by the rest of the Board of Commissioners Tuesday morning.

The commissioners had just emerged from a lengthy executive session which included Johnson’s performance review when Moye made the motion.

Johnson’s contract will likely be extended again in December along with other county employees, commission Chair LaFaye Copeland said. That extension will not be coupled with a performance evaluation.

“I’m very appreciative to the county commissioners for allowing me to extend my contract to the end of the year,” said Johnson, who took the county administrator position last September. “I’m looking forward to next year’s contract and to moving forward.”

Also discussed at Tuesday’s commission meeting was Johnson’s use of a county vehicle.

Commissioners voted 4-1 to ratify an agreement which allows Johnson to use a county vehicle to commute to work from his residence and for business purposes. Commissioner June Knight dissented.

Johnson requested use of the vehicle in lieu of a pay raise.

The agreement also stipulates that other county employees can use the vehicle for long-distance travel when it is available.
