CAIRO — The Grady County Volunteer Fire Department was the recipient of a $3,000 donation last week from a local business for their disaster relief efforts.

Southern Promotions and Apparel presented the check to Grady County Fire Chief Richard Phillips on Friday.

“We did it because we’re passionate about our community and wanted to give back in some way,” said Jeremy Jones, owner of Southern Promotions. “It was good to see everybody come together after the storms and we just wanted to be a part of that.”

Southern Promotions had sold several hundred “#GradyUnbroken” and “#StillUnbroken” T-shirts and about 50 caps over the past several months, Jones said. The only question was where to donate the proceeds.

“It was for charity,” Jones said. “We just didn’t really know where we wanted to put it yet.”

City fire chief Bill Schafer had initially approached Jones with the idea of selling caps with the “#GradyUnbroken” slogan in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in October.

The slogan and design of the caps was later updated to “#StillUnbroken” after the county was hit by a tornado in March, and the phrase started to be printed on T-shirts as well.

Jones, himself a volunteer firefighter with the county, had initially wanted to split the money between the city and county fire departments, but Schafer suggested that all of the proceeds should go to the county instead.

“Finally we were able to get our ducks in row and figure out how much we had raised and we made the donation,” Jones said.
