THOMASVILLE — Butler-Mason YMCA is preparing to offer a competitive boys gymnastics team for the first time, and classes will be led by a Hollywood stunt performer.
The new team will compete for trophies and medals on the competitive circuit, and class instructor Ryan Carr hopes some of his students can eventually qualify for athletic scholarships.
“They’ll all turn into great football players, or maybe they’ll just have an awesome time doing gymnastics,” Carr said.
Carr was a stunt performer on the set of Divergent, and he’s been on television shows including Empire, Shameless, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and The Exorcist.
Since moving to Thomasville last year, Carr has spent much of his time coaching girls gymnastics, but he wanted to expand opportunities at the YMCA for young men as well.
“Let’s start a program for guys here so I’m not the only guy in the gym,” he said.
Students will pay a monthly tuition fee ranging from $75-125 depending on how many practice sessions they attend each week.
Practices take place Tuesdays through Fridays from 4-7 p.m.
Free placement tryouts will take place August 24.
“Whoever comes, we’re going to put them in a program,” Carr said.
