THOMASVILLE — Georgia Pines opened the doors to a new peer-driven addiction recovery support center Thursday morning.

Located at 2004 Georgia Highway 122 East, the Wecovery Peer Recovery Center is designed to provide services to individuals coping with addiction and an area where they can escape their former lifestyles.

“Wecovery is a haven for individuals who feel that they need a safe place to come, maybe sit back and drink a cup of coffee in a drug-free environment and actually be inclusive, welcome and comfortable,” Christopher Sheffield, program manager, said Thursday.

The new program will be peer-led by former addicts and is designed to act as an additional resource for other individuals working through recovery from substance disorders.

Substance abuse services at Wecovery will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Special events will be held on Saturdays.

More than two dozen people were present for Wecovery’s grand opening Thursday, though Georgia Pines deputy director Robert Hurn said the center has already been treating clients since an earlier “soft” opening.

At its capacity, the Wecovery Center will be able to treat approximately 20 individuals, Hurn said.

“This center will be an outpatient-based haven where individuals will feel safe and comfortable in their environment and have access to several community resources to help overcome their obstacles,” program director Jamekah Brooks said in a statement. “The recovery activities being offered are community-based services for individuals with a substance use disorder and consist of activities that promote recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, well-being and independence.”
