CAIRO — The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is assisting local authorities in the case of an apparent bomb threat which was called into Cairo High School last week.
Jamy Steinberg, special agent in charge with GBI, said Tuesday that the bureau provided some analytical support and assistance in obtaining certain records for the investigation.
Steinberg said, however, that local authorities continue to handle the case.
Two phone calls were made to the high school the afternoon of Monday, May 13 in which a caller allegedly threatened to blow up the campus.
Resource officer Duke Donaldson, who answered the second phone call, said he believed the caller sounded like an adult male and was possibly the parent of a Grady County student.
Donaldson alerted law enforcement to the threats and the school was locked down for nearly two hours as officers formed a perimeter around its campus.
Meanwhile, investigators attempted to identify the caller by tracing their phone number.
Classes were eventually released at their regular time with officers present to ensure students’ safety, but after-school activities that day were cancelled at the request of law enforcement.
Students returned to class the following morning with additional security presence.
