DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton man charged with DUI plowed through gravesites at West Hill Cemetery early Friday morning, toppling headstones and scattering flowers left behind by loved ones, according to the Dalton Police Department.
Cliff Eric Sneed, 41, of 416 Cedar St. No. 5, was charged by the Dalton Police Department with DUI (less safe driver) and failure to maintain lane.
“Dalton officers are working (Friday) morning with the Public Works Department to determine the exact number of graves that were damaged or destroyed in the crash and also to compile a list of the grave plot owners/next of kin to make contact and inform them of the damage,” police spokesman Bruce Frazier said in a press release.
The incident happened at about 2 a.m. Sneed was driving a black 1990 Chevy GMT 400 pickup truck east on Emery Street near the New Georgian Apartments when it failed to negotiate a curve, left the road, went into the cemetery and ran over some dozen graves, causing heavy damage. Dalton police officers responded to the scene and asked Sneed to perform several field sobriety tests.
