LIVE OAK, Fla. — Matt Frier, a two-time state champion for the Suwannee High football team who later played at Florida State University and for the Indianapolis Colts, has been named to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Hall of Fame.

Frier was named to the HOF on Monday and will be formally inducted during a Sept. 22 ceremony in Gainesville.

“At my age, it’s really neat to look back and I really appreciate it,” Frier said of being named to the Hall of Fame. “It was a special time because of the community support in Suwannee county. There were fish frys and cookouts during the week. They fed us at summer camps. I remember for the first state title, the year we went to Naples, the pep really was one of the neatest things I’ve seen. The whole school joined together and jogged for a mile following the bus as we left town. 

“It was literally like out of a book.”

In 2007, the FHSAA named Frier as one of the top 100 players in the first 100 years of Florida High School football. Frier set a state record with 220 receptions. 

He had 3,688 yards receiving and 41 touchdowns for the Bulldogs. 

“What I remember most is playing for coach (Mike) Pittman — my first year he talked about winning a state title and put that in our minds — and the camaraderie that was built with teammates and the whole town,” Frier said. “The records came as a result of playing with three great quarterbacks and one of the best offensive lines in high school football.” 

Frier went on to a win a national championship at FSU in 1993. He will join Mike Pittman in the FHSAA HOF. Pittman was inducted in 2017.
