Yellow Jackets rally to sweep Jones County

THOMASVILLE — Nick Herndon’s double snapped a tie in the top of the seventh inning, and the senior closed out a 4-2 win on the mound, lifting the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets to a first-round sweep Wednesday of their Class AAAAA series with Jones County.
After a 6-4 win in Game 1, the Yellow Jackets, now 26-4, will travel to Jesup to take on Wayne County in the second round.
As the away team in Game 2, the Jackets trailed 1-0 after five innings as Greyhounds starter Colby Gordon held them to two singles. Carson Odom led off the sixth with a single and advanced on a passed ball. Zach Fletcher’s double brought Odom in, and Herndon followed with a single to right to plate Fletcher for a 2-1 lead.
Dalton Chapman’s double in the bottom of the frame tied the game at 2-2. But with just one on and two out in the seventh, the Jackets struck for the decisive runs.
Fletcher reached on an infield hit, and Herndon followed with a double to left, scoring Odom with the go-ahead run, and an error on the play allowed Fletcher to score.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Greyhounds got a walk and a single with one out, but Herndon got a strikeout. After a wild pitch put runners in scoring position, he got a game- and series-ending pop up.
Pace Mercer went the first 5 1/3 innings striking out nine and allowing six hits. Shane Stephenson pitched two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief.
Gordon went the distance for the Greyhounds, fanning four and walking two while giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
In the opener, the Greyhounds broke out to an early 4-1 lead before Thomas County Central charged back.
Jones County scored three times in the third on an infield single and an error. The Jackets answered with Herndon’s run-scoring groundout to cut the lead to 4-2 in the third and scored four times in the fifth.
Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Tyler Carter’s single to left tied the game at 4-4. Stephenson doubled home the tie-breaking run, and Mercer’s sacrifice fly capped the scoring.
R.J. Delaney got the win, going six innings while striking out eight and giving up two earned runs on six hits and two walks.
Fletcher, 4-for-7 in the series, was 2-for-3 in the opener with a double and a triple.
Chandler Wooten was 3-for-7 with a double for Jones County in the series.
Wayne County swept Fayette County 8-0 and 11-1. The second round series is scheduled to start May 2 in Jesup.
