DALTON, Ga. — A 44-year-old Dalton man died Monday night after accidentally shooting himself, according to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Edgar Lee Browning III, of 315 Cobia Way, died after being taken to Hamilton Medical Center. Browning suffered a single gunshot wound to the head shortly before 10 p.m., according to a statement from Sgt. Daniel Jones with the sheriff’s office’s investigations division.

“Investigators from the Criminal Investigations Unit executed a search warrant at the residence and determined that the victim was moving a bag containing a firearm and the firearm discharged from within the bag, striking the victim in the head,” the statement said. “Based upon evidence gathered at the scene along with interviews with the occupants of the residence, it appears to be an accidental shooting incident.”

Jones said no one was in the room with Browning when the handgun went off. Browning’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation state crime lab for an autopsy and the investigation is “ongoing,” according to the statement.
