Bulldogs sweep first-round series with Laney

THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville Bulldogs made quick work of the Laney Wildcats in their Class AA state baseball playoff series.

Hurston Waldrep struck out 16 in a complete-game 3-0 win in Game 1, and Gabe Duncan went 4-for-4 to spark the Bulldogs to a 14-1 win and complete the sweep Wednesday.

Duncan had two doubles and drove in two runs, and Jacob Bradshaw raced around the bases for an inside-the-park three-run homer to cap a five-run second inning. The Bulldogs tacked on five runs in the fifth inning.

Bradshaw also went the first four innings on the mound in Game 2, striking out eight and giving up three hits and one unearned run.

Duncan drove in two runs for the Bulldogs (23-6). Will Wetherington was 0-for-3 but had three RBIs.

Will Wetherington went 0-for-3 but drove in three runs, and  Maylon Cochran was 0-for-1 with two RBIs Dalton Dollar  went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Thomasville hitters had nine hits and drew 11 walks.

Waldrep, throwing only 99 pitches, allowed just three singles and did not walk a batter. He retired the final 15 batters he faced.

Dollar had two RBIs and Wetherington had the other RBI. Duncan was 2-for-2, giving him a 6-for-6 day.

The Wildcats’ William Baker held the Bulldogs to five hits, all singles, and gave up just one earned run. He plunked two Bulldogs but did not issue a walk.

Thomasville will host Bacon County, which swept Dodge County in its opening series, for a series starting May 2.
