Pebble Hill going to the dogs

Published 8:00 am Saturday, February 23, 2019

Pebble Hill Plantation is going to the dogs on Sunday, March 3 from noon to 4 p.m.

Working Like a Dog Day is a time for adults, children and their canine pets to enjoy an afternoon at Pebble Hill Plantation.  Pebble Hill’s last owner, Elisabeth Ireland Poe, loved animals, especially her working dogs. So come celebrate “all things working dogs” on this fun afternoon. Working dog demonstrations, dog-themed scavenger hunts, storytelling, dog art show, pet adoptions and contests with your dog are some of the planned activities. Take a self-guided tour of the grounds while getting in your dog’s daily walk. Food/drink vendors will be on site.

Please note that dogs are welcome but must be on a leash at all times, and we appreciate your cleaning up after your dog.

The Main House will not be open for tours this day. However, the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery will be open, and we encourage you to see the featured loan exhibition “Working Like a Dog” from the Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford, New York. This exhibition features selected works by more than 20 major sporting artists from the 17th through the 20th centuries. Additionally on display is “Pebble Hill’s Working Dogs,” an exhibit featuring images and information from the Pebble Hill archives on the working dogs owned by Poe. A separate ticket is required to view these exhibitions.

Please consider bringing pet food to donate to the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society. Sponsors of the event are Clanton-Malphus-Hodges Veterinary Hospital & Pet Motel and Thomasville Animal Hospital.

Tickets are $5 per person and include most activities (children under 2 years are free). To view the “Working Like a Dog” exhibitions in the Main House, an additional $5 ticket is required, and children must be 6 years or older to tour (sorry, dogs not allowed inside the Main House).
