Cortez was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the upper left side of his chest.

Emergency medical services began treating Cortez at the scene before transporting him to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville.

The incident occurred on the 900 block of 11th Ave. NE Feb. 1 at approximately 9 p.m.

Roland, who responded to the incident, located a .40 caliber casing near the front of the house.

Marcelo Lopez, Cortez’s roommate, told police he was sleeping in his bedroom when he was awakened by the sound of a door knocking and Cortez yelling for him.

Lopez told law enforcement he heard two gunshots and grabbed a machete and ran into the living room.

Lopez said young black male dressed in dark-colored clothing was standing over Cortez’s body and ran outside.

Lopez said the man pointed a gun at him but the gun did not go off.

Lopez and a neighbor of Cortez’s neighbor, who said she heard the sound of the gunfire, told law enforcement they saw four individuals jump into a silver or gray car which left traveling west along 11th Avenue NE.

Washington ran down to Cortez’s house where she found him bleeding and dialed 911.

Investigator Tony Turner is handling the investigation of the incident.
