Tift County Board of Education names sole finalist for superintendent position

TIFTON — At a special called meeting of the Tift County Board of Education at 5 p.m. on Dec. 19, the board voted to name Adam Hathaway as the sole finalist for the school superintendent position.

The current superintendent, Patrick Atwater, informed the board of his position to retire in April after serving in the position for 13 years. His anticipated retirement date is June 30, 2019.

Hathaway is currently serving as superintendent in Schley County, Georgia, according to a press release from the board.

He is a graduate of Clinch County High School and joined the US Army after graduation, serving in the 101st Airborne Division, the release states. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English education from Valdosta State University and has his specialist degree in educational leadership from VSU as well.

According to the release, Hathaway has taught and coached in Cook, Berrien and Ben Hill counties and served in administrative roles in both White and Gilmer counties.

Hathaway’s wife, Heather, is also an educator. They have two children, Archer and Sariah.

“My family and I are looking forward to becoming part of the Tift County community,” said Hathaway, according to the release. “I am excited about the future of Tift County school and can’t wait to officially become a Blue Devil,”

Hathaway’s appointment will become final after a state mandated 14 day public comment period has passed, the release states. The board plans to take official action in January.
