- Bobby Haven | The Brunswick NewsFrederica quarterback Jaylin Simpson (3) looks to run against Valwood's Blaine Cooper (33) during a GISA Class 3A playoff game on Friday in St. Simons.
ST. SIMONS, Ga. — Isaiah Jackson scored six touchdowns, rushed for 230 yards on 15 carries as Frederica Academy defeated Valwood 60-27 Friday in a GISA quarterfinal playoff football game.
The lopsided victory would have been even more convincing if the Knights hadn’t turned the ball over three times in the game.
“I thought the kids were really focused,” said Brandon Derrick, head coach for Frederica.
The win was extra satisfying because Valwood knocked the Knights out of the playoffs 14-10 in last year’s semifinals. And the Valiants beat Frederica earlier this season 7-6 in overtime.
“It’s kinda a rivalry game,” Derrick said.
Frederica came out firing in the opening drive on seven plays with a balanced running and passing attack. Quarterback Jaylin Simpson tossed a 10-yard pass to Patrick Brunson on the opening play. Later in the drive, Simpson had runs of 13 and 29 yards to put the Knights on the Valwood 10-yard line. Simpson tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Veal on the next play for an early 7-0 lead.
The teams traded possessions for the remainder of the quarter before the Knights scored on the first play of the second quarter on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Denver Anthony for a 13-0 lead after a missed extra point.
Frederica forced a punt on the next Valwood possession and scored two plays later on a 57-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Shawn Sheffield, who weaved between multiple defenders to cross the goal line to give the Knights a 20-0 lead.
Frederica scored on its next possession on six consecutive running plays, culminating with a 2-yard run by Isaiah Jackson to increase the lead to 26-0.
After forcing a punt on the next Valwood possession, the Knights drove down the field again, with the big play being a fake punt on the Valwood 40-yard line. Denver Anthony ran the ball 31 yards for a first down to the nine yard line. Jackson scored his second touchdown two plays later to give the team a 33-0 lead at the half.
Valwood got on the scoreboard on a short drive early in the third quarter starting at the Knights’ 13-yard line on an interception, scoring three plays later to narrow the lead to 33-7.
Frederica answered on the next possession after an unsuccessful onside kick attempt by Valwood gave the team the ball at midfield. Four plays later, Jackson scored on a 40-yard run to increase the lead to 40-7.
After forcing a Valwood punt, the Knight got the ball in good field position on the Valiants’ 40-yard line. Jackson scored again on a 36-yard run to increase the lead to 46-7.
Valwood answered with a six-play drive to make the score 46-14 early in the fourth quarter.
Frederica turned the ball over on the first play of the next possession to give Valwood the ball on the 29-yard line. Quarterback Caleb Burns tossed a pass to Cam Carter on the next play to close the gap to 46-21 midway through the fourth quarter.
Frederica answered with a 46-yard touchdown run by Jackson for a 53-21 Knights lead. After Valwood fumbled the following kickoff, Jackson scored his sixth touchdown of the night on a 34-yard run to make the score 60-21.
Valwood scored a meaningless touchdown with time running out for a final score of 60-27.
After the game, Derrick told his players they will need to play with the same intensity and focus when they travel to Newnan next week to face Heritage in the state semifinal game.
“We have to come back to work on Monday,” he said. “We get to play one more game.”
