MOULTRIE, Ga. — Ho hum.

Not so much, oh well, another Packer football playoff victory. Those were the first words from Colquitt County head coach Rush Propst in describing the effort Friday in getting past the first round on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

Daijun Edwards — while unofficially surpassing 3,000 rushing yards while still in his junior season — scored three touchdowns when the No. 1 and unbeaten Packers scored 34 points in a row. The victim was a game bunch from Etowah High School in Cherokee County, who while losing 34-5 did something only Grayson was able to do in the 2018 season. Colquitt County went through the first quarter without scoring a touchdown.

Etowah even led 3-0 on Sean Hopper’s 38-yard first quarter field goal. The Packers proceeded to lead 13-3 at the break behind two Ryan Fitzgerald field goals and passes intercepted by seniors Jay Ward and Camari Louis. Ward intercepted Dalton Miller to end the game’s first series.

Colquitt also turned the football over twice in the first quarter, one an interception by Justin Sheerer of Etowah and the other a fumble on a pass reception.

On the offensive front, the Packers used three centers starting with regular guard Jerick Davis. Thomas Barry filled in some during the first half and all of the second half, and regular starter Will Rykard played late in the first half.

Down 3-0 at 1:38 of the first, Colquitt protected the football and took into the second period. There, Fitzgerald connected from 46 yards out to tie the score. At 5:41, he put the Packers up for good making a 47-yard field goal.

Edwards was held to 14 yards on six carries in the first half, but he scored for the first time when Louis picked off Miller and scampered 58 yards the other way. That set up Edwards for a 1-yard touchdown at 1:36 before the half.

Edwards then broke loose for a 72-yard run from scrimmage early in the second half. He had all 80 yards of a three-play scoring drive, the touchdown covering 5. He ended the game with 96 yards on 10 totes.

Colquitt junior quarterback Jaycee Harden was 8-for-13 passing in the first half for 104 yards and then threw a 71-yard strike to Lemeke Brockington, a sophomore, in the third period. Brockington had three catches for 94 yards.

While the Eagles were kept out of the end zone, they managed to hold onto the football in spurts. A big part of that was senior receiver Jude Sprecher, who had five catches for 106 yards. Etowah used two quarterbacks, Miller and Brayden O’Neill, and they combined for 174 yards through the air. Nicklas Maddox rushed 16 times for 54 yards.

After the Harden-to-Brockington scoring connection, a blocked Eagle punt set up Edwards to score from 2 out at 3:25 of the third.

Etowah’s last two points were on a bad punt snap out of the end zone.
