Rain, rain going away

VALDOSTA — South Georgia should slide from a wet weekend into a long dry spell later this week, according to forecasters.

A stationary front has stalled over the region, bringing showers around Georgia through the middle of the week, though Monday looks the wettest, said Frank Strait, senior meteorologist for the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.

“Monday is the final shot for rain for a while,” said Don Harrington, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.

Until the front dissipates in midweek, South Georgia will be “warm and muggy,” Strait said.

After the front falls apart, it will just be warm. The weather service forecast calls for sunny skies from Wednesday through the weekend.

“We’ll be back to a stretch of hot and dry weather,” Strait said.

High temperatures are expected to rise from 87 Monday to around 90 from Wednesday onward, the forecast says. The normal high for Valdosta for this time of year is 84, Strait said.

Overnight lows should be around 70 all week, though Harrington said there was a chance they could dip into the upper 60s later in the week.

There is little chance of widespread severe weather, Harrington said. Strait said that while any widespread trouble is unlikely, he wouldn’t be surprised to see isolated “pop-up” storms with gusty winds early in the week.
