‘Consistent’ Colquitt routs Valdosta

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt County High head football coach Rush Propst is using the word “consistent” often in the early stages of the 2018 season. Four games in, the Packers are — if anything — consistent.
Take junior quarterback Jaycee Harden. For the third game in a row, the first-year starter completed passes to nine different teammates and accounted for three scores.
Take the Packer offense. For the third game in a row, the point total is in the 40s.
Take the Packer defense. For the third game in a row, it’s causing turnovers and making life miserable for an opposing quarterback.
Take the opposition. Bad snaps and missed opportunities seem to follow whomever Colquitt County faces.
The latest victim is longtime rival and Class 6A top 10 Valdosta High. Harden was 15-for-23 for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Ty Leggett was back in form as a running back with 132 rushing yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Ryan Fitzgerald was perfect on two extra-long field goals. Cornerbacks Jay Ward and Nyquan Washington each intercepted Valdosta quarterback Tate Rodemaker. All totaled, Colquitt County — No. 1 in Class 7A — is now 4-0 after a 48-13 rout on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
But, something strange did happen Friday. For the first time, someone took a lead on the Packers, and the Wildcats did it twice before one finally stuck.
Jaheim Bell caught a touchdown pass that was negated for ineligible receiver in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Valdosta had four tries to get over the goal line from the Packer 3-yard line, but only got as close has halfway between the 1 and pay dirt.
But Rodemaker’s out-pattern to freshman Kaleb Robinson turned into a 32-yard touchdown play at 7:55 until halftime. Valdosta was ahead 6-3 as a bad snap cost them the PAT kick.
From there it was all Colquitt County with two touchdowns before the break for a lead of 17-6. Add to the Wildcat woes a 40-yard missed field goal tried with three seconds on the clock. In the third quarter, the Packers scored 24 points to 7 for the visitors, those 7 coming on the final play.
Fitzgerald, after not attempting a field goal in two straight games, made a 55-yarder (the longest in school history with the conventional snap and hold) to cap off the game’s opening series. He was good from 46 yards away in the third period. Plus, the senior was 6-for-6 kicking the PAT.
Two plays after Valdosta took the 6-3 lead, Leggett found a simple crease created by his senior-laden offensive line and scored a 77-yard touchdown. It was his first time in the end zone since the Corky Kell Classic Aug. 18 in Atlanta.
Valdosta was keying on the running game, the Packers netting three yards on the ground in the first quarter. But with three rushes, Leggett netted 107 yards in the second quarter.
Junior Daijun Edwards had a rough first half with 19 yards, but came back with 64 in the second half plus a 57-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Colquitt had two one-play scoring drives in the third period. Leggett did his trademark cutting with the football, going outside two times on a 19-yard touchdown. This was after the Packers got a piece of a punt.
Montavious Ponder then returned a punt to the Wildcat 41-yard-line. Harden had all the time he needed to set and get the throw he wanted to Ja’Naz Graves over the middle. This was Graves’ third catch of the season, and all are touchdowns.
Harden, with 54 seconds left in the third, fired the ball to Marvion McDonald in the right corner for a 27-yard touchdown.
Tight end Josh Hadley was the leading receiver Friday, four catches for 76 yards.
