TIFTON — One weekend into the season and the Tift County Lady Devils volleyball team already has a trophy to show for it, by virtue of success at the Coastal Corner Invitational in Kingsland.
“We won our side of the bracket,” said Tift head coach Caleb Dawson.
The Lady Devils won three of five matches Saturday, defeating Groves, Brunswick and Colquitt County.
“We competed against Lowndes,” he said. Then against Colquitt, “We really turned it on.” After winning the first set against Brunswick, the Lady Devils dropped the second, 26-24. The score of the third and final set was 15-11 in Tift’s favor.
The trophy is likely the first in the still young history of Tift volleyball. The start is one of the school’s best, too.
Three of many outstanding performances belonged to Chayla Lopez, Rebecca Jinright and Macy Weldon. Jinright played a top-notch defensive game and Weldon “barely came off the court,” Dawson said.
Tift was slated to play at Ware County Tuesday afternoon. The team’s home opener is set for Thursday at 5 p.m. against Sherwood Christian.
