TIFTON — Fans got a preview of what is coming in Tift County football and what will come in future seasons with the annual Soap Bowl Friday.

Played at the Tift County High mini-stadium, athletes as young as sixth grade all the way through varsity scrimmaged with cheerleaders on the sidelines for extra encouragement.

Sixth grade, which only began practice July 30, mainly ran plays on offense. Full 30-minute scrimmages were held between seventh and eighth grade, eighth and ninth and ninth and junior varsity. Junior varsity and varsity squared off for an hour.

With such a limited time on the field, most games featured few touchdowns. Eighth grade had a receiving touchdown against seventh and later snagged an interception in the closing minutes. No score was kept on the scoreboard.

Rosendo Ramirez was busy in the varsity scrimmage, hitting two field goals and an extra point. Airick DeLoach had a receiving touchdown and Mike Jones scored on a rush. Tift’s defense was strong, with the junior varsity bottling Jones most of the evening. Gary Coleman and Deontae Overstreet claimed interceptions for the varsity.

Multiple quarterbacks saw time in the junior varsity-varsity game and Tift fans also had their first look at the newest QB in uniform, Patrick Felton. Felton took the first two snaps of the varsity scrimmage at the position and was elusive on the field with one long run when backed up on his own goal line.

The Blue Devils will have the opportunity to hit an opponent in another uniform Friday as they host Lee County in a scrimmage at Brodie Field. Tift will open the regular season on the road Aug. 17 at Warner Robins.
