More thunderstorms on the way

VALDOSTA — More thunderstorms are on the way to South Georgia, according to forecasters. A cold front is expected to move into the region and park itself for a few days, causing “another unsettled period” this week, said Frank Strait, senior meteorologist for the private forecasting firm AccuWeather. A strong southerly flow will bring in more moisture, raising the chances of storms each day weeklong, said Ricardo Humphries, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office. Thunderstorm chances all week range from 50-70 percent, according to the weather service’s Valdosta forecast. Rain is the biggest concern with the storms, Humphries said.  “Some of these storms could be more efficient rainmakers,” he said. Strait said areas around South Georgia could get two to four inches this week, with isolated areas getting six to seven inches, leading to flooding concerns. “Areas that get hit repeatedly with storms could be at risk of flash flooding,” he said. The storms should shave some degrees off the thermometer, the forecasters said. High temperatures, recently in the low 90s, should fall off to the upper 80s early in the week, Humphries said. After the cold front arrives Tuesday, daytime highs for the rest of the week should drop to the mid-80s, Strait said. The average high for this time of year is 92 degrees, he said. Strait said there is little chance of widespread severe damage, though both forecasters said there could be isolated strong-wind incidents.
