There is a new Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russel novel! Laurie R. King’s bestselling (and long running – “Island of the Mad” is the 21st novel in the series) characters are back – without Mrs. Hudson to keep their lives running smoothly. Mary is having little luck as a domestic engineer and finding a new housekeeper that will work with this most eccentric couple is a challenge. Enter Lady Vivian Beaconsfield, newly vanished from Bethlem Royal Hospital. At least it will give Mary and Sherlock an excuse to avoid dusting the furniture.
In Nora Page’s first Bookmobile Mystery, librarian Cleo Watkins has Words on Wheels. Set in Catalpa Springs, Georgia, it is a great summer cozy mystery about libraries, books and reading, small towns and murder. “Better off Read” is a quick, light read.
Remember the band Tears for Fears? Charlton Pettus has been associated with the group for a number of years, producing their last album and touring as their lead guitarist. He has now written “Exit Strategy,” a novel that explores an organization that exists to make people with enough money, in enough trouble, disappear. When Jordan Parrish makes the decision to exit, he thinks he has no choice. But,what if Exit Strategy is creating business for itself?
There are plenty of pilgrimages you can make, but the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) is one of the oldest and most famous. There are lots of routes, but they all end up in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist have written “Two Steps Forward” about two traumatized people, Zoe and Martin, who decide to walk the Chemin in the attempt to reset their lives.
One of the pivotal concepts of our modern world is precision. While we might be able to get away with eyeballing ingredients in a recipe or guestimating the amount of lumber we need for a project, the larger world needs exact measurements, very low tolerances and no wiggle room. Simon Winchester, author of books such as “The Professor and the Madman” and “A Crack in the Edge of the World” has written “The Perfectionists,” about the development of systems of measurement that allow us to create items we cannot see and measure the tiniest of phenomenon.
If you are interested in the question of consciousness – what is happening when we see things, think things — and in brain science – how does mental illness and/or addiction change our brains and what could be helpful to suffering people — you might find Michael Pollan’s new book interesting: “How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us about Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression and Transcendence.”
Dave Itzkoff has written a biography of Robin Williams. “Robin” is an Amazon Best Book of May 2018 and happy readers have called it “required reading” for Robin Williams fans.
