MOULTRIE, Ga. — With the completion on Tuesday of the annual Field Day at Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition in Moultrie, the two-minute clock begins ticking down to the annual October farm show.
While the fall show brings tens of thousands over three days, the summer event gives farmers a chance to get a close look at new plant varieties and farm technology.
On Tuesday morning about 325 attendees toured the Expo crop exhibition area in trams pulled by tractors, making stops to hear representatives from various seed companies describe what’s new with their products. An estimated 275 to 300 attended the 38th annual Field Day in 2017.
“We had a great day, great crowd,” said Expo Executive Director Chip Blalock. “Couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
A new product for Expo in 2018 was the SePRO Corp. herbicide Brake.
In recent years pigweed has developed resistance to products that in the past had kept it in check. Some pigweed plants basically were immune to the chemicals previously used to control it. After reaching a height of a foot or so the mutant weeds were pretty much immune to anything except digging them up, and could reach heights greater than that of a taller-than-average man.
“It’s excellent on pigweed,” Blalock said of Brake. “It’s safe for use in cotton. It gives us another tool in pigweed control.”
So far 2018 has presented a challenge, with relatively dry weather in the area earlier in the year before rain began falling nearly every day, Blalock said.
“No two years are ever alike,” he said of farming. “You see a difference between the crop planted (around) the first of May and what we had to wait for rain to stop and planted around June 15.”
With August around the corner, preparations for the three-day event in October are in full swing.
“It’s a real positive for the big show Oct. 16, 17 and 18,” Blalock said of Field Day.
