TIFTON — Setting the final millage rate and awarding a bid for the Pebblebrook water main replacement project are on the agenda for the Tifton City Council at its July 16 meeting.
At the July 2 workshop meeting, finance director Wayne Putnal said that the information he received from the Tift County Tax Commissioner’s Office indicated there is nothing the council is required to do with the millage rate.
“Overall our digest has increased,” Putnal said at the July 2 meeting. “Right now it would provide approximately a 2 percent increase in taxes levied this year than what was levied last year, if we leave the millage rate the same.”
Council members went over the bids for the Pebblebrook water main replacement project at the July 2 meeting.
Out of the six bids, Doyle, Hancock and Sons out of Doerun was the low bidder at $511,526.10.
The other bids were around $660,000, with the highest bid reaching more than $865,000.
Council members Jack Folk and Johnny Terrell raised concerns about the Doyle bid being so much lower than the others.
Amending sewer rates is also on the agenda.
At the workshop meeting, city staff explained that one of the requirements of the city’s outstanding sewer bonds is that the city has to maintain 110 percent of the net revenue.
Should the rates not be adjusted, the bond holder could require the bonds be repaid early and could lead to future borrowing to be more expensive for the city.
Revising proposed plans for the Commerce Way parking lot is on the agenda.
The council will consider proposals to provide banking services to the city.
The council will also consider three alcohol license requests, one from EZ Mart at 3301 US Highway 82, one from Kwiq Stop Food at 301 W. 7th Street and one from Don Julio’s Mexican Restaurant at 211 Main Street.
The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m at Tifton City Hall, 130 E. 1st Street. It is open to the public.
