TIFTON — The first day of the Georgia Recreation and Park Association was a monumental one for its young swimmers.
Several records were set at the Baldwin Drive Aquatic Center.
It was quite the day for Tiftarea Tidal Wave swimmer Elijah Hellman.
Hellman was part of three records set in the pool, two in relays and another individually.
With teammates Karson Ponder, Hannah Murphy and Brynna Burke, Hellman swam a record-breaking 1:04.31 during preliminaries, then the foursome shattered that with a time of 1:03.23 in the afternoon finals. The same group first swam the mixed 10-and-under 100-yard freestyle relay in 57.45 seconds Friday morning and in 56.49 seconds in the finals.
Hellman’s individual mark game in the boys 9-10 25-yard butterfly, which he finished in 14.1 seconds. The previous mark had been set in 1996.
Ansley Nunnally of Jeff Davis set two individual records Friday. She lowered her time of 27.65 seconds in the girls 9-10 50 freestyle set during the morning session to 27.16 seconds in the afternoon. Nunnally’s other record came in the 25-yard butterfly where, in the finals, her time of 13.71 seconds broke a mark set five years ago.
George Breed of Wayne County established a new mark in the boys 7-8 50-yard freestyle at 32.23 seconds. Like others, Breed set the record earlier in the day by swimming 32.56 seconds in the morning heat.
Pike County’s new recreation team, the SeaWolves, immediately made an impact. Asher Cooper swam a state record 1:11.16 in the morning, then a time of 1:10.52 in the afternoon to win the boys 9-10 100-yard individual medley. Hellman was second in that race.
Brynna Burke was second in the girls 9-10 50 freestyle finals with a time of 29.49 seconds. Burke finished behind record-breaker Nunnally. Burke followed that with a second place in the 9-10 25-yard freestyle. This time, she finished two-tenths of a second behind Oconee County’s Ella Dillon, who finished in a flat 13.3 seconds.
Elijah Hellman continued his hot streak with a second place in the boys 9-10 50-yard freestyle. Karson Ponder was third in the same race. Ponder had a second place finish in the 9-10 25-yard breaststroke as well as in the 9-10 25-yard breaststroke. His time of 18.57 barely trailed the 18.53 by Jayden Martinez of the Habersham Rapids.
