Weather: More of the same
VALDOSTA — “Typical summertime weather” is how meteorologist Frank Strait of the private forecasting firm AccuWeather summed up the outlook for South Georgia this week. “Typical” means hot days, muggy nights and chances of late afternoon thunderstorms. Daytime highs for Valdosta are expected to dip slightly early in the week into the mid-90s with a slight decrease in storm activity as a weak frontal system moves into the Southeast, Strait said. Then the mercury starts climbing again, with highs hitting 97 by the end of the week and storm chances around 50 percent. Storms are being generated by moisture from Gulf of Mexico sea breezes, said Ricardo Humphries, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office. Overnight lows are expected to remain in the mid-70s weeklong, according to the weather service’s forecast. The normal high for this time of year is 92 degrees, Strait said, so Valdosta will be running a little warmer than usual this week. Another frontal system may push through this weekend, shaving a few degrees off the thermometer, Strait said. Both forecasters said there was little chance of widespread severe weather, though Humphries said isolated strong storms can’t be ruled out.
