TIFTON — There was lots of singing during the last day of Tift County’s softball camp Friday.
Groups of players alternated between offense and defense during scrimmage games. For the crowd gathered around and behind home during the offense’s portions, a lot of the talk was in rhymes, the long-established tradition of softball team cheers.

“See the batter at the plate?” began one of these brief songs.
“She’s the best one in the state.”
Tift softball head coach Kyle Kirk, who headed the camp, said he did not have to encourage this camaraderie.
In fact, “They’re probably teaching my older [players],” he said.
Kirk recently spent five mornings working with young baseball players — he’s also the head coach of Tift’s squad in that sport — and last week was the same for softball.
There were approximately 30 in camp for softball, he said. Many are returnees from previous camps.

“A lot of repeats,” Kirk said.
The campers worked on “basic fundamentals” during the week, including hitting, baserunning and defense. With the older players, he said, they were able to work on more advanced activities, such as double plays. They also worked on pitching, something, Kirk said, not as stressed for the youngest of players.
Games were frequent and involved younger and older players, sometimes a combination the two. Current Lady Devils players served as assistants.
And like baseball camp before it, there was also a water day. Sprinklers were turned on and the slip and slide saw plenty of business.
Kirk thanked his sponsors. The same group that provided for baseball camp did the same for softball. Campers were fed daily and all received T-shirts.
