TIFTON — The Tifton City Council is expected to vote on the Fiscal Year 2018-19 budget and at its June 18 regular meeting.

The preliminary budget was discussed at a meeting on May 25, where City Manager Pete Pyrzenski presented a budget to the council for review, and a public hearing about the budget was held June 4.

Among the line items discussed were employee raises, funding for the Main Street Project and the creation of a new economic development department.

The council will also be voting on several rezoning requests that were discussed at the June 4 workshop meeting.

The first application is to rezone 12.19 acres located off of US Highway 41 from residential professional to general business. This rezoning was submitted by Michael Bowen and would allow for the development of a “holistic neighborhood environment.” This property has been owned by the University System of Georgia since 1996 and has been undisturbed open land and woodland. It stretches from the intersection of Highway 41 and Interstate 75 to the railroad.

The next three applications encompass three properties along US Highway 41 where Waffle House, Affinity Clinic and the shopping center where Harvey’s Supermarket is located.

Wallace said that the city is requesting that these three properties be rezoned from neighborhood commercial to general business to accommodate for future growth.

The agenda items up for a vote also include resolutions approving the jail inmate agreement with the Tift County Jail, the municipal court judge service agreement, designating the June 30 Rock the Block as a festival and declaring surplus property, as well as ordinances amending the Tifton Land Development Code for parking standards, street definitions and establishing solar and wind farms within the zoning of the city.

Alcohol license applications for El Limon, located at 501 S. Ridge Avenue, Jay’s Food Mart, located at 10 Sandra Drive and The Local Kitchen and Bar, located at 212 S. Main St are on the agenda for discussion.
