TIFTON — Operation Sock Drop raised more than $9,000 on Apr. 29.

The fundraiser, which was put on by 8-year-old Porter Johnson, was to benefit One Leg Up On Life, a nonprofit that provides prosthetic limbs to amputees in Haiti who cannot afford them.

Games and activities, such as tug-of-war, bubbles and water toys, a three-legged race and football, were available for kids to play while waiting for the main event.

The sock drop itself took place around 5 p.m. A small plane piloted by Herb Maraman flew over the field and dropped socks at the target painted on the field. Each sock had a name inside it.

Johnson picked up the sock that landed closest to the center of the target. The winner of the sock drop was Rita Griffin, who donated all of the prize money back to the fundraiser.

Johnson said he wanted to thank everyone who donated for their support. He also wanted to thank Craig Sowell and the Tift County Recreation Department, Herb Maraman for flying the plane, Maghan Campbell for help with planning and Namedroppers, South Georgia Bank and Longhorn Steak House for donations.
