MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Norman Park man wanted on a probation warrant made his legal situation even worse when he dragged a police officer trying to stop his car at a gas station.

The Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office later arrested the man and a woman who was in the car after finding the vehicle abandoned.

It started at about 2:35 p.m. Monday when a deputy spotted a gold-colored Chevrolet Cobalt at a Shell station near the intersection of Highways 37 and 111. The officer had received information that Francis Thomas Daughtry was in a car matching that description and that a woman would be with him, police said.

When the officer approached, the man sitting in the car gave his name as Andrew Bradwell, police said, and would not provide identification. While the deputy was waiting for the arrival of another deputy to help identify the driver of the Chevrolet a woman exited the store and got in the car. She told the deputy that she did not know the name of the man in the car.

When the driver cranked the car the officer ordered him to get outside and then moved toward the front of the car. The driver drove toward the officer, who tried to open the car door and pull the driver out.

The deputy was dragged while his arm was inside the car, injuring his right arm and wrist. After returning to his patrol car the deputy saw the driver turn right on Dunn Road and then turn right on DeMott Subdivision Road.

The deputy lost sight of the car, but an anonymous caller reported the car abandoned near the intersection of DeMott Alley and DeMott Street. There, police arrested Heather Jett as she was returning to the car.

Police saw a man, later identified as Daughtry, lying down nearby in a wooded area.

Daughtry, 21, 239 E. Weeks Road, was charged in connection with Monday’s incident with aggravated assault, theft by taking, driving without a valid license, willful obstruction of law enforcement officer and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer for a felony offense. He also was charged with the outstanding count of probation violation.

Jett, 18, of the same address, was charged with two counts of being party to a crime and obstruction of an officer.
