Mency sentenced to 15 years for death of cellmate

LIVE OAK, Fla. — A jury found Corry Mency guilty on the lesser charge of manslaughter for the killing of his cellmate Wednesday.
According to the Suwannee County Clerk of Court Office, Mency was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison.
Mency was charged with first-degree murder for the death of his cellmate, Gerard Gabriel, at the Suwannee Correctional Institution on Oct. 21, 2015.
According to court documents, a correctional officer overheard the inmates yelling and went to check on the cell. When the officer entered the cell, Mency said his roommate had suffered a seizure, the documents state.
The officer found Gabriel lying on the bed covered by a blanket with blood on the wall near his head.
Mency was removed from the cell and later told officers that Gabriel had been sexually harassing him, the documents state.
According to inmate testimony, around 6 a.m., one inmate heard a struggle and beating coming from Mency’s cell. After a few minutes, he heard Mency call out for medical assistance about a seizure.
The medical examiner reported Gabriel’s death was manual strangulation. The examiner also found blunt-force face and head trauma on the victim
Mency’s sentence will be served consecutively with his 2006 sentence of life in prison for carjacking.
