TIFTON — Bobby Earls’ Tift County Blue Devils are one of the hottest soccer teams in southern Georgia.

Holders of a 5-5-2 record a month ago, Tift County has won five straight games and limited opponents to four goals in the process. They enter the state Class AAAAAAA tournament as a No. 3 seed and will take their streak on the road to Pebblebrook High. The winner will take on either Kennesaw Mountain or Walton, the latter being a No. 1 seed.

Unfortunately for Tift, while the Devils might be the hottest team in the south, their opponent tonight, Pebblebrook, is on fire in the north. The game is set for 6:30 p.m., at Pebblebrook.

The Falcons (15-3) have eight consecutive victories. No one has scored more than a single goal against them during that span and they have nine shutouts in 18 games. Score Atlanta rated them as the 10th best team in the state in Class AAAAAAA.

Earls said based on what he’s seen on film, “They’re pretty good.”

There are similarities between the programs, he said.

Pebblebrook was 7-3 in late March, following a 2-1 loss to East Coweta.

“That probably woke them up,” Earls said. He compared the Falcons’ revival to Tift’s awakening after consecutive losses to Veterans and Colquitt County, which saw them outscored 9-0.

The streak has had its fair share of dramatics. Tift dominated a two-loss Thomas County Central team in a 3-1 victory. Three days later, they scored three goals in 12 minutes to turn a 2-0 deficit against Camden County into a 3-2 victory. Tift followed that with a 3-1 win over Lowndes, their first victory over the Vikings in four years.

They have managed to achieve all of this in relatively good health. Earls said they were a bit banged up, but nothing that would not be expected at this point in the season.

Tift will give its best battle to Pebblebrook. After falling to 5-5-2, Earls admitted to having some doubts. He is excited for this opportunity for his squad.

“Every game is like icing on the cake,” he said.
