TIFTON — Two Gym Devils will be competing at Friday’s state finals.
Elyssa Roberts will be competing in all-around and Rylee Watson advanced to the vault finals after both scored high enough at the state preliminary meet at Dunwoody High Saturday.
The Gym Devils were 11th as a team at the prelim, compiling a total score of 100.1. The top six schools advanced to the finals in team competition. Tift’s best event total came in vault, where Roberts, Watson and Lexi Cavanaugh combined for 27.4 points.
Roberts was third in all-around scores, earning a 9.525 on bars, a 9.55 on vault, a 9.55 on beam and an 8.95 on floor exercise for a grand total of 37.575 points. The gymnast who won first in all-around was Savannah Schoenherr of North Oconee who had the day’s only perfect score in any event. Schoenherr earned a perfect 10 on bars.
Roberts was third on vault, fourth on balance beam, fifth on bars and tied for 12th on floor.
Watson was seventh on vault, her score of 9.2 enough for a chance at state laurels. She barely missed out on competing in all-around in the finals. The 14th and final qualifying athlete, McKenzie Colbert of Walton, totaled 34.6. Watson’s overall total was 34.275 points.
Cavanaugh had an 8.65 on vault. Watson earned an 8.425 on bars and an 8.65 on floor.
Kenslee Ann Webb also competed for the Gym Devils at the preliminary, but the squad was missing another competitor. Briana Nelson was injured during spring break and was not able to participate at Dunwoody.
“We really missed Briana on bars and vault,” said head coach Jodi Roberts.
