TIFTON — Tift County’s Lady Devils finished the Region 1 soccer schedule without a blemish and the Blue Devils ended their campaign with a bang Tuesday.
Tift’s girls won a 2-0 result over the Vikettes, their second straight shutout and fourth in five games. They cinched the region title last Friday against Camden County and are 13-3-1 overall.
The Blue Devils won by a 3-1 score. While the Devils will only be the third place team going into state, they have played lights out recently.
Head coach Bobby Earls said Tuesday’s contest was the “best game we’ve played all year.”
The boys have won four straight games. Earls said their success has not been a fluke. The Lowndes result may have been a bit unexpected, however.
Tift’s Blue Devils had not earned a victory over Lowndes since April 17, 2014. They had lost seven straight times to the Vikings before this triumph.
“The biggest thing was our mindset,” said Earls. His team was determined not to lose again.
They went up 2-0 on a goal by Jonathan Escobar (assisted by Christopher Banda) and one by Hugo Ventura, a header off an assist from Elian Calderon.
Five minutes later, the Vikings halved the deficit to 2-1. Fifteen minutes were left to play.
At eight minutes, Richey Hernandez scored an insurance goal on a free kick from 35 yards out. Earls described the kick as a line drive.
“He nailed that thing,” said Earls.
Rosendo Ramirez played another outstanding game in goal, with several saves that Earls said amazed him.
“We’re peaking right now,” he said.
The win over Lowndes had a bonus for another team: Colquitt County. Lowndes had been set to win region, but Tift’s win resulted in a 4-2 in the conference standings. Colquitt and Lowndes split one-goal decisions during the year, but the tiebreaker went to the Packers for the title.
Tift has games Thursday at Lee County, which wrap the regular season.
The first round of state is set for April 25, with the Blue Devils traveling to Pebblebrook. The Lady Devils, who are to play April 24, will host Westlake.
