MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie man has been arrested in connection with a March 20 shooting, with his girlfriend also taken into custody Tuesday after police found him at her residence.
Darryl Wayne Burks Jr. was arrested Tuesday at the 419 11th Court Southeast residence of Marquita Knight, Moultrie police said.
“His girlfriend Marquita Knight was arrested for allowing him to be at her residence knowing we had warrants for his arrest,” Moultrie Police Department Lt. Freddie Williams said.
Burks, 30, 921 Fourth Ave. S.W., is accused of the March 20 shooting of Leeroy Sheppard. Police have charged him with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, possession of firearm by convicted felon and two counts probation violation.
Knight, 34, is charged with interference with a police officer.
Sheppard was shot in the chest, but was able to drive himself to Colquitt Regional Medical Center with what police described as a “serious” injury.
It was about 7:40 p.m. when Sheppard was shot while in his 2004 Ford Escape in the 100 block of Sixth Street Northwest, police said.
Sheppard told police that he heard several gunshots before noticing a burning sensation in his chest and realizing that he had been shot.
Burks and Sheppard had an altercation the weekend prior to the shooting, Williams said.
Burks had a prior felony conviction on a cocaine possession charge, according to police.
