MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A Baldwin County man and woman have been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation that has netted several pounds of drugs, weapons, and more than $100,000 in cash.
The seizure of the money, $111,000, from a residence on Colony Farm Road last Thursday is one of the largest amounts of cash ever discovered in a drug investigation by agents with the Ocmulgee Drug Task Force (ODTF), according to ODTF Commander Wesley Nunn.
“It’s a very large scale operation,” Nunn told the newspaper on Monday. “Right now, with all the leads that we have, we’re just trying to filter out just how far it goes.”
Nunn said he had contacted agents with the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for assistance in the case, which remained ongoing as of Monday at press time.
He also said his office had been in touch with the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Atttorney’s Office for guidance concerning the case.
Nunn said the investigation might lead to additional arrests.
The arrest of the first suspect took place following a brief vehicle chase with local authorities about 10 a.m. last Thursday, the drug commander said.
Nunn said the suspect, identified as Reginald Jarrod Reynolds, 38, of 384 Colony Farm Road, Milledgeville, was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima.
After being taken into custody by authorities, Reynolds was charged with Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act for trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, felony possession of marijuana, failure to use signal lights, and failure to drive within a single lane.
At the time of Reynolds’ arrest, Nunn said he was on probation for a previous conviction of trafficking cocaine.
The drug commander said agents were acting on information they had received from state probation officers, as well as information they had learned on their own about the suspect.
“He (suspect) stopped after a brief chase, of between one and two miles,” Nunn said.
Reynolds reportedly was traveling between 70 and 75 mph in a residential subdivision along Shanna Drive in Milledgeville.
Nunn said the chase involved two of his agents and they were assisted by Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robert Adams.
During the chase, Reynolds reportedly threw out some of the drugs that he had in his possession, Nunn said.
A search of the area later turned up some drug residue, which subsequently led drug agents to continue their investigation and visit the residence where the Reynolds had been living.
Nunn said shortly after his agents arrived at the residence a woman pulled up in the driveway. The woman later was identified as Mia Coleman, 26, also of 384 Colony Farm Road, Milledgeville.
Coleman was arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and felony possession of marijuana, jail records show.
“She arrived at the same time officers did,” Nunn said.
One of the drug agents asked Coleman for her permission to search the residence or they could go and get a search warrant, the drug commander said, noting that deputies with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office accompanied his agents to the residence.
“She gave a consent to search the residence,” he said.
Inside the residence Nunn said agents found approximately 7 lbs. of marijuana and
“anywhere from a half to a whole kilo of cocaine,” Nunn said.
He pointed out that the cocaine had an estimated street value of $22,000, while the marijuana had an estimated street value of $16,800.
Nunn said the marijuana and cocaine were found in vacuum-sealed plastic bags throughout the residence.
Drugs of both kinds were also found in the kitchen. Nunn said the money was found in various places, including a safe.
In addition, two guns, an AR-15 and a .380-caliber pistol, were discovered during the search.
“The pistol was loaded, but the rifle was not,” Nunn said.
A money counter also was seized during the search of the residence, as were some digital scales, he added.
Reynolds and Coleman were taken to the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center and jailed.
