MEIGS — The City of Meigs soon could have a new governing document in place.

Meigs City Council recently heard an update regarding proposed changes to the city’s charter.

Tom Lehman, city attorney, said he contacted other Thomas County towns to see how their charters are formatted.

“Meigs is almost like Boston, in terms of the way they’re organized,” Lehman said.

Proposed charter updates include moving from six to five council members.

“No one is going to have to be removed from the council,” Lehman said, adding current council members will finish their terms.

Another proposed change is council members being elected every two years. In the first two years, if the new charter is approved, three council members would be up for election.

The mayor and the remaining two council members will be up the following two years.

The move away from at-large voting, Lehman noted, is another proposed change.

“We are designating posts for everyone to run,” he added.

Lehman suggested changes to the city’s charter back in January.

“I think this is a more satisfactory way of doing it,” Lehman said of the proposed changes.
