The Thomas County Middle School fifth grade class visited Pebble Hill Plantation recently. This was the fifth year that the middle school has come to tour the plantation for a day of learning and fun. The 300-plus students came to the museum to see the plantation site which was once the home of Elisabeth Ireland Poe.

“We always look forward to the students coming each year,” said Lori Curtis, Pebble Hill tour coordinator. “They bring their contagious energy and enthusiasm which motivates us to make each year better than the year before.”

While at the museum, the students were led by docents to learn about the history of Pebble Hill, the way of life for the people who lived and worked here, and the role it has played in Thomasville’s history.

“Pebble Hill is a unique opportunity to explore the technological advances from the early 20th century and the sustainable community that existed,” said TCMS teacher Gail Trotter. “Many students are unaware of this treasure in their own backyards, and we are grateful to the Pebble Hill staff for sharing this piece of local history with us.”
